International Summit

International Summit

John Curtin Gallery

2nd November – 14th December 2012

International Summit is a collection of painted works that provides a humorous portrait of yearning, geographical wanderlust and a confusion about the real wealth of mountain imagery that can be discovered (at a distance) in Perth, Western Australia: a flat city. Few places are more populated by the cultural and individual consciousness than the mountain, whose strange lyrical and geographical power across and in proximity is explored in this exhibition. Timeless, dense, massive and cruelly inhospitable, the mountain represents many things across different cultures, from challenge to object of beauty. This exhibition explores the potency of the mountain as a symbol as it appears in diverse cultural moments, including Chinese folklore, American theme parks, Google Maps and in volcanology. Formed outside of humanity and impervious to human folly, the mountain persists and dominates within each visual tradition.

International Summit was exhibited as a part of John Curtin Gallery’s SoDA12 postgraduate exhibition, alongside the Curtin School of Design & Art.

Artists: Jan Andruszkiewicz, Sheridan Coleman, Ben Crappsley, Kelsey Giambazi and Shayne O’Donnell.
